While the previous paragraphs address the overall system functionality, the principal strength of the SAT system is in the design and friendliness of the user interface. The SAT User Interface uses an architecture of pop-up windows, forms, and menus to convey available options. Hierarchical menu options are displayed during the selection process to minimize training and reference to operator manuals. In most cases, the operator simply positions the menu bar to the desired option and selects it. Extensive validation is performed on both individual and related entries with easy-to-understand error messages alerting the operator to detected anomalies. To minimize keystrokes, the SAT system uses site-specific default values (i.e. OSRI), system-generated entries (i.e. date, time, etc) and, depending upon operator-entered values, automatically generates subsequent related field values.
